August 2019 in Review

As August draws to a close, so does the summer! Though we are sad to say goodbye to the season of sun, we are excited for Fall and the new adventures it will bring. We enjoyed the end of our summer to the fullest with these events!

Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser

On Saturday, August 3rd, CAC characters went to Country Lanes in Farmington Hills for a cystic fibrosis fundraiser! The female spider hero showed off her moves as she taught her princess friends how to bowl for the first time. The characters also helped out with selling raffle tickets and announcing the winners at this event.

The Rainbow Connection Wish Reveal

On Thursday, August 8, Crowns members were present at the Detroit Foundation Hotel to meet superhero Braelyn. His wish is to go to Disney in October, and the Detroit Foundation Hotel partnered with The Rainbow Connection in order to fundraise and make his wish come true. The characters were so blessed to have the opportunity to meet such a wonderful family and create a special day that they will never forget.

Friendship Circle Meet and Greet

On Tuesday, August 13, Crowns characters visited the Friendship Circle of Michigan for a meet and greet. Like always, the characters had so much fun visiting this special needs group and spreading the magic with the children!

Beaumont Hospital Visit

On Friday, August 16, CAC went on their monthly visit to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak to visit the pediatric floor as well as the intensive care unit of the pediatric hospital. The Crowns princesses had so much fun playing Dream Cruise bingo, eating ice cream with Ryan Rocks Outdoor Adventures, and discussing royal matters with the other little princesses! A couple of our new members went on this visit as well. We are so lucky to be growing and have new members to continue our mission of bringing smiles and magic to the pediatric community.

Royal Princess Party

On Wednesday, July 17th, Crowns Against Cancer had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with the Miss Farmington Cities Scholarship Program for a Royal Princess Party. There was cookie decorating, crown making, and coloring pages at this fun event with the little princesses. CAC princesses were also amazed by the dance moves of the little royals at the princess dance party!

Lifetime Fitness Summer Camp Princess & Superhero Party

On Thursday, July 18th, CAC characters visited the Lifetime Fitness Summer Camp in Troy for a cookie decorating party with the campers. There were around 110 children at this event, and the characters had a blast with everyone involved!

Watermelon Drop

Also on Thursday, July 18th, Crowns characters attended the 12th Annual Watermelon Drop & Pop-Up Playground event at the Livonia Public Library. The characters had the chance to crown the watermelon before it was royally smashed while spreading the word about our organization. Afterwards, the characters had a great time interacting with the children through a variety of games.

Autism Hero Walk

On Sunday, July 28, CAC visited the Detroit Zoo to partake in the Autism Hero Walk with the Autism Alliance of Michigan. The characters had their own event space to interact with the children and play games. This was a super fun event for a great cause.

June 2019 in Review

With the sunnier weather in June, CAC had a lot of outdoor activities this month, which included three parades! Hopefully these sunny days continue!

St. Joe’s NICU Reunion

On Saturday, June 1st, CAC had the honor of attending St. Joe’s NICU Reunion in Ann Arbor. Since patients often spend a considerable amount of time in the unit, strong relationships are often formed between families, patients, and medical staff. The reunion serves as a way to reconnect, whether it be only a few weeks since the graduation or 20+ years.

Potter Park Zoo Walk

On Saturday, June 8th, Crowns characters visited the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing to participate in the Walk for Kids hosted by the Rainbow Connection. It was a busy and fun event filled with eating with friends, dancing with an amazing DJ, and arts and crafts to name a few.

March of Dimes Detroit

Also on Saturday, June 8th, princesses from Crowns were present at the March of Dimes located around the DMC Brush Mall. Bounce houses, food vendors, dancing, and the opportunity to make some new friends were some highlights of the event, in addition to walking for a great cause.

International Children’s Festival

On Sunday, June 9th, CAC made an appearance at the International Children’s Festival at the Balkan American Community Center in Troy. It was an amazing experience for the characters to interact with children of different cultures, as well as to see a few of them perform traditional dances!

City of Southgate Heritage Day Parade

On Saturday, June 15th, Crowns had the opportunity to spread the news about our mission at the Heritage Day Parade in Southgate. The characters had a blast interacting with the children and the families amidst the festivities.

Beaumont Hospital Visit & Queen Izzy Visit

On Friday, June 21st, CAC followed up on another visit to Beaumont Hospital to see the patients in the Intensive Care Unit of the Pediatric Hospital. Later on in the evening, a few princesses also visited Queen Izzy. Back in October when the characters first had the opportunity to meet Queen Izzy, she stunned us all with her courage and kindness, reminding us to “always treat other with the utmost kindness and love”. At this visit, the ice queen granted her some special magic as well as a new princess bear friend.

Rainbow Connection Family Wish Picnic

On Wednesday, June 26th, CAC had the wonderful opportunity to meet one on one with families at the Family Picnic Day sponsored by the Rainbow Connection. Pictures with a cool motorcycle and playing various games with the children were the highlights of this event.


New Additions to the Crowns Against Cancer Team

We are blessed to have so many opportunities for our organization to grow in members as well as the activities that we take part in. This past month we also welcomed some members to our team.

At the beginning of the month, Crowns officially welcomed Christine as the Director of Event Operations. While she is new to the position, Christine is definitely not a new face in Crowns Against Cancer, having been actively involved in the group for SOME TIME and even being featured as the MVP last February. Her position entails the coordination of larger events of all varieties, whether they be fundraising or patient focused. Read more on our Facebook page here.

More recently, CAC also welcomed Maddy as our Event Planning and Marketing Intern. The demonstration of her capabilities as well as her genuine compassion for our mission made her stand out during the extensive interview process. May 2019 in Review

We are lucky to have had so many events this May, from hospital visits to fundraisers, and are looking forward to the many more to come this summer!

  • March for Babies MCC

On Sunday, May 5th, characters from CAC participated in the March for Babies at Monroe Community College. Hosted by the March of Dimes, the event was dedicated to making the health of mothers and babies a priority. The characters were able to visit the Family Zone and participate in the walk in order to support a great cause.

  • Posh Boutique Fundraiser

On Wednesday, May 15th, Crowns Against Cancer held a fundraiser at the Posh Boutique in Novi. We would like to thank everyone who came out to support us as well as Posh Boutique for partnering with us for this event.

  • Beaumont Hospital Visit

On Friday, May 17th, Crowns once again had the honor of visiting the children at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. It was so special to see the smiles on the children’s faces as the members returned to their roots to spread the magic.

  • Wish Upon a Prom

On Saturday, May 18th, CAC was invited to attend the Wish Upon a Prom, a special night for teenagers to experience the prom they might have missed out on due to illness and/or treatments. CAC members were able to help out with the start of the event and contribute to the preparations in making a magical night.

  • Relay for Life

On Saturday, May 18th, Crowns also participated in the Relay for Life in Shelby Township. The Relay for Life movement is hosted by the American Cancer Society as a fundraiser to support communities battling cancer. The characters had so much fun dancing with the children, as well as helping them make crowns and superhero masks. It was also a great opportunity to meet the other organizations dedicated to fighting cancer that were present at the event.

  • Super Drew Family Extravaganza

On Sunday, May 19th, princesses and superheroes from CAC attended the Super Drew Family Extravaganza, a fundraiser dedicated to helping families with children battling cancer. The event was hosted by the Super Drew Foundation and featured bounce houses, a petting farm, horse rides, face painting, a DJ, and so much more! The characters had loads of fun interacting and dancing with the children, as well as even going on a train ride!

  • March for Babies Dexter

On Sunday, May 19th, characters from Crowns also were present at the March for Babies walk in Dexter. The characters greeted people as part of the opening ceremony, participated in the diaper dash prior to the event, and had fun in the Family Zone as well as the mini party afterwards. It was an amazing memory for both the children and the Crowns characters!

Walled Lake Central Make a Blanket Day

On Saturday March 9th, various characters visited Walled Lake Central high School for Make a Blanket Day. Ever since 2015, the Walled Lake Central Community has been partnering with Fleece and Thank You every year to make blankets for children in hospitals all across Michigan. In addition to taking pictures, recording video messages for the receiving patients, and of course making blankets, the characters also took a short break dancing to the “Cupid Shuffle” with the girl scouts in attendance.

Craft Day

On Sunday, March 31st, Crowns members gathered at Oakland University to create craft presents such as flower crowns, foam crowns, and masks to hand out to patients during future hospital visits. Old and new members alike gathered to build the Crowns community as well as carry out the Crowns mission.

Friendship Circle Visit

On Sunday, April 7th, CAC made another visit to the Friendship Circle of Michigan to hang out with special needs children during one of the weekly programs. The visiting princesses made crafts as well as read books and held sing alongs with the children. Of course, warm hugs were also shared.

Gateway Sensory Haircut

On April 20th, Crowns characters visited Gateway Pediatric Therapy for Autism Awareness Month. The princesses interacted with the children as they received haircuts. Adding to the activities, the Ice Queen was able to share a special moment by having the opportunity to read a story to the children.

Lincoln Consolidated School Classroom Visit

On April 26th, CAC princesses visited the Lincoln Consolidated Schools in Ypsilanti to visit a special needs classroom. The characters sang songs, had dance breaks, read books and participated in making crafts with the children. There was time for the characters to visit other kindergarten classes and make many new friends as well.

Schoolcraft College Living and Learning Atypical Variety Show

Also on April 26th, CAC princesses attended the Living and Learning Atypical Variety Show at Schoolcraft College. Aside from interacting with the children, the characters were able to watch a magnificent talent show that included a rock band, a ventriloquist, and even a game of guess who. The show was presented by the Living and Learning Center, a nonprofit organization in Northville, MI that works with teens and adults who have autism and related challenges. Autistic Play Place Pancake Pajama Party

On April 28th, Crowns made a special appearance at the Autistic Play Place’s Pancake Pajama Party. Waking up early was definitely worth it, even for the princess of sleep! The fun event included a bounce house, corn in the hole, arts and crafts, hair styling with tinsel, and showings of Hotel Transylvania III and Finding Dory. One of the highlights was definitely catching flying pancakes to eat for breakfast! The characters had loads of fun exchanging their ballgowns and superhero suits for pajamas to relax and play with the children at this event.
